The oft-criticized Nintendo Today! app is getting another boost to sway skeptical mobile users. Users will be able to download it to keep track of Switch 2 game announcements during the next Nintendo Direct. The app is the company’s latest attempt to control where gamers get their news.

The next Nintendo Direct will take place on September 12. The show starts at 16:00 Moscow time. You can follow the events on the YouTube channel and the official Nintendo website. The September Nintendo Direct presentation will last 60 minutes and will be dedicated to upcoming games for Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2. The platform holder did not specify which ones exactly.

The upcoming Nintendo Direct will take place on the eve of the Japanese release of Super Mario Bros., which took place on September 13, 1985, so viewers will almost certainly be in for some news about the mustachioed plumber. Ahead of the series’ 35th anniversary, Nintendo announced the platformer Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury, the Super Mario 3D All-Stars remaster collection, and the augmented reality racing game Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit.

The app also has limited video playback capabilities and doesn’t work well with screen rotation on smartphones. It’s unclear how well the Nintendo Today! app is prepared to host a livestream of such a large event. The servers Nintendo relies on could be overloaded if the event isn’t streamed on YouTube.
