At a recent event called Unreal Fest Japan, Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney revealed some intriguing details about the upcoming Unreal Engine 6. And, as it turns out, the new version of the engine is scheduled to launch in approximately two and a half years—that is, by 2028.

The current version of Unreal Engine 5 isn’t known for its high performance, resulting in graphical stuttering seen in major games built on this engine. The degree to which the engine itself is at fault may vary from case to case, but in any case, it’s damaging to the engine’s reputation.

During his keynote, Sweeney stated that Unreal Engine 6 aims to “bring together the best features of Unreal Engine 5 and the Fortnite ecosystem.” He didn’t specify what that meant. He likely meant that the developers would try to bring the best elements of UEFN, a dedicated version of the engine for Fortnite, to Unreal Engine 6.

In short, the announcement of Unreal Engine 6 isn’t just a show-stopper; it’s a signal from Epic Games about their long-term ambitions and a beacon for the entire gaming industry in the coming years.
