Capcom removed the Enigma Protector from Resident Evil 4 Remake, which fans of the game have noticed.
Denuvo has been the guardian of the Resident Evil 4 remake since its release in March 2023. However, in early February 2026, the Austrian system was replaced by The Enigma Protector, familiar to fans from other Capcom games.
Following this, users began complaining about a performance hit compared to Denuvo. Digital Foundry experts confirmed the issue: Enigma unnecessarily loads the CPU, leading to frame rate drops.
Capcom did not comment on either consumer complaints or the results of Digital Foundry’s investigation, but as players noted, The Enigma Protector was removed from the Resident Evil 4 remake on March 3.
Enthusiasts haven’t yet had a chance to thoroughly analyze the performance of the Resident Evil 4 remake without The Enigma Protector, but judging by the first (enthusiastic) reviews, “the difference is astounding.”
The Resident Evil 4 remake was released in March 2023. It is available on Xbox Series S/X, PlayStation 4 and 5, and PC. The title has received very high user ratings on Steam, with over 93% of gamers giving it a positive rating.
