Valve has added an age verification system for users in the UK to comply with the UK Online Safety Act. Information about this has been published on the Steam support site.
To access adult content game pages on the Steam store and associated community hubs, UK users must be verified.
The process involves linking a valid credit card to your account. Those who already have this payment method registered do not need to do anything – no restrictions will be applied to them.
Valve noted that of all the age verification mechanisms considered, it believes that storing credit card data is the most reliable in terms of ensuring the highest degree of user privacy.
Previously, data miners found references to a similar system in the code of future Grand Theft Auto Online updates, which will most likely be introduced in Grand Theft Auto VI.
