The Nintendo DS gaming console was discontinued 12 years ago, but it only this year overtook the Switch as the brand’s most popular gaming console.
Among all gaming consoles, the Switch is second only to the PlayStation 2, which has sold at least 160 million units. Switch software sales have exceeded 1.5 billion copies, and the number of active users per year reaches 129 million.
The most popular games remain Mario Kart 8 Deluxe with 70.5 million copies sold, Animal Crossing: New Horizons with 49.3 million, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate with 37.4 million, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild with 33.6 million, and Super Mario Odyssey with 30.2 million.
The company also reported shipments of 7 million Switch 2 consoles in the last three months of the year. In just seven months since its launch, the new console’s shipments reached 17.4 million units, while it took the PlayStation 5 15 months to reach comparable figures.
One factor that could drive additional demand for the Switch 2 this April could be the release of a full-length film featuring characters from the Super Mario franchise.
