Sega’s series of adventure games about the underwater adventures of the intelligent dolphin Ecco hasn’t seen a new release in almost 25 years, but it’s finally getting ready to return, franchise creator Ed Annunziata announced.
As the game designer stated, the new part of the series will receive “modern gameplay and support for the capabilities of current video cards.”
The original Ecco the Dolphin (1992) was released on the Sega Genesis and quickly gained cult status thanks to its unusual plot, graphics, and environmental theme. The main character, a dolphin named Ecco, goes on a journey through time and space to save his family after a sudden waterspout. The dolphin visits ancient civilizations and even an alien world, fighting enemies, solving puzzles, and interacting with other sea creatures and powerful forces along the way.

The latest release in the franchise remains Ecco the Dolphin: Defender of the Future. The game was released in 2000 on PS2 and was a 3D reboot of the series. Unlike all previous installments, Annunziata was not involved in the development.
