Valve has published complete CAD files, specifications, a materials list, and a video tutorial for the Inkterface e-ink faceplate for the Steam Machine. This information will help users print and assemble their own e-ink faceplate.
Valve unveiled the Inkterface front panel during its Steam Machine reveal last year. At the time, Valve stated that the display accessory was not intended for retail sale. The standard Steam Machine uses a magnetic front panel that requires no tools to install or remove. Valve stated that it plans to release the files for users and third-party developers to create their own panels.
The build involves using a 5.83-inch Adafruit E Ink display, and Bluetooth connectivity is provided via an ESP32-based board. Users must 3D print the front panel, assemble the electronics, and upload the firmware. One social media user, X, shared the panel assembly process.
The manufacturer promises to release an app for the Inkterface on Steam, but until then, users are encouraged to create their own Applmage images by following the instructions. After connecting to a Steam Machine via Bluetooth, users can configure the E-Ink panel to display real-time hardware data, various images, and much more.
