After years of speculation and very few official details, Assassin’s Creed Codename Hexe is finally showing signs of moving closer to the spotlight. Ubisoft has provided a fresh development update, confirming that its upcoming dark Assassin’s Creed experience is progressing, although players will have to wait a little longer for substantial new information.

In its Fall 2026 franchise update, Ubisoft acknowledged the long wait surrounding Hexe and reassured fans that the development team remains committed to its original creative vision. According to the publisher, the next major update on the project is planned for 2027.

A darker chapter for Assassin’s Creed

First revealed in 2022, Assassin’s Creed Codename Hexe immediately attracted attention for its mysterious atmosphere and apparent departure from the familiar formula of the series.

Unlike recent large-scale adventures, Hexe is expected to explore a much darker historical setting, reportedly drawing inspiration from 16th- and 17th-century Central Europe and the infamous witch trials.

The setting offers plenty of opportunities for a different kind of Assassin’s Creed experience. Religious paranoia, political manipulation, superstition and the fear of the unknown could provide the foundation for a more atmospheric and narrative-driven adventure.

Ubisoft has previously described the project as a unique, darker experience, developed by its veteran team at Ubisoft Montreal.

Why fans are watching Hexe so closely

One of the biggest questions surrounding Codename Hexe is how Ubisoft plans to distinguish it from previous entries.

The franchise has explored ancient civilizations, medieval conflicts and massive historical worlds. However, a story built around witch hunts and an atmosphere of psychological tension could give the series a completely different identity.

Rather than simply expanding the open-world formula, Hexe has the potential to put greater emphasis on atmosphere, stealth and storytelling.

Naturally, Ubisoft has not yet confirmed specific gameplay mechanics, platforms or a release date. Details circulating online should therefore be treated with caution until the company makes an official announcement.

2027 could be an important year

For now, Ubisoft appears focused on getting the project right rather than rushing it towards release. The confirmation of another major update in 2027 suggests that the company is preparing to reveal more about its vision when the development team is ready.

With Assassin’s Creed approaching its 20th anniversary in 2027, the timing could also make Hexe one of the franchise’s most closely watched upcoming projects.

For fans waiting for something different from the traditional Assassin’s Creed experience, the message is clear: Hexe is still in development, its vision remains intact, and its next chapter is getting closer.

The shadows may not have lifted just yet, but Ubisoft has finally given players a reason to look forward to what comes next.

Assassin’s Creed Codename Hexe currently has no confirmed release date. More official information is expected in 2027.
