Assassin’s Creed Black Flag is now available, and it comes with a series of DLC packs, the combined cost of which is significantly higher than the game itself. The downloadable content primarily consists of cosmetic items and in-game assets, rather than story-driven expansions.
A remake of Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced retails for $60 (standard edition), with all paid DLC for the game costing $85.
This includes four character and ship skin packs (Hellfire, Master Assassin, Sea Serpent, and Dragonstorm) for $10 each, and a rare collectible map unlock pack for an additional $5.
Such add-ons are common in Assassin’s Creed games, but their quantity and price at launch have sparked player dissatisfaction. Ubisoft has reiterated that such DLC is not essential to the complete gaming experience.
“Add-on packs are entirely optional bonuses for interested players, and are not required to enjoy or complete the game,” Ubisoft’s response to the Steam review states.
Assassin’s Creed Black Flag has received “mixed” reviews on Steam, with several players criticizing the DLC prices.
