Sony appears to be stepping up its PlayStation 5 security efforts ahead of the highly anticipated launch of Grand Theft Auto VI. The company has released several firmware updates in a relatively short period, as hackers continue looking for ways to bypass the console’s security protections.

The latest update, version 26.07-14.22.00, arrived on November 2, 2026, just weeks before GTA VI’s expected November 19 release. According to Sony’s official patch notes, the update includes additional security fixes, although the company has not explained exactly which vulnerabilities have been addressed.

Why GTA VI is at the centre of the security battle

The recent updates come amid growing activity in the PS5 homebrew and jailbreak communities. Hackers have been exploring vulnerabilities that could allow users to run unauthorised software and potentially play pirated games.

One particularly significant development came in September, when researchers demonstrated a jailbreak affecting a wide range of PS5 firmware versions. Sony subsequently released updates aimed at closing security gaps.

The timing is especially important for Rockstar Games. GTA VI is expected to become one of the biggest entertainment releases in recent years, making it a potential target for piracy and unauthorised distribution.

Will players be forced to update their consoles?

Reports from PlayStation database trackers suggest that GTA VI may require PS5 firmware version 14.22.00 to run. If confirmed, this would mean players using older system software could need to install the latest update before launching the game.

However, Sony has not officially confirmed that the firmware requirement is specifically connected to GTA VI or its anti-piracy measures.

There is also an important distinction between finding a console vulnerability and successfully pirating a game. A jailbreak does not automatically provide everything needed to extract, copy or distribute protected game files.

Sony is racing against hackers

With the launch approaching, Sony appears determined to strengthen the PS5’s security before one of the industry’s most commercially important releases reaches players.

Whether the latest updates will be enough remains uncertain. Hackers continue to investigate new vulnerabilities, while Sony can respond with additional security patches.

For now, the battle between console security researchers and Sony is becoming an increasingly important part of the countdown to GTA VI.
