Developers from Terahard studio announced RuneSmith, a tactical role-playing game in which a squad of dwarves explores dungeons and celebrates each successful raid in a tavern. A trailer was released to mark the announcement.
The developers describe the project as a blend of classic fantasy, turn-based combat, and dark humor. Players will assemble a party of adventurers and set out to hunt a powerful villain. However, saving the world isn’t the primary goal. According to the plot, the antagonist owes a dwarf money, and such things are not forgiven in the underground kingdoms.
RuneSmith’s key feature will be the runesmithing system. Players will be able to create weapons, armor, and magical items by combining different effects. The developers promise a host of unexpected interactions: a simple cloud of smoke can easily turn into a poisonous trap, and a failed experiment can wreak havoc on the battlefield.
Beyond combat, dwarves will be allowed to live according to all the genre’s conventions: brawling in taverns, accepting dubious contracts, upgrading the forge, and engaging in drinking marathons. Some effects even rely on the characters’ intoxication—an overindulged hero can lose consciousness right in the middle of battle.
RuneSmith is set to release on PC (Steam).
