This fall, Nintendo will release an updated version of the Switch 2 console with a replaceable battery, but the company has other plans for the future. The Japanese manufacturer is also considering releasing a version of the Switch 2 with a Full HD (1920 × 1080 pixel) OLED display.

According to the publication, the company is currently only considering the possibility of creating an updated console model. If the project is greenlit, full development will begin later this year. In that case, the Nintendo Switch 2 OLED release may not occur until 2028.

By comparison, the original Nintendo Switch was released in March 2017, while the Nintendo Switch OLED model only appeared four years later, in October 2021. If the rumor is true, the updated Switch 2 will reach the market faster than the first-generation console.

Sources cite the cost of OLED panels as the main obstacle to the new model’s launch. Nintendo is reportedly already in talks with suppliers, including Samsung Display, but the price difference between OLED screens and the LCD panels currently in use remains a key factor in the decision.

The transition to OLED technology, scheduled for around 2027, is in line with the Japanese brand’s usual product update schedule. In the meantime, the company will have to balance improving product quality for gamers with the harsh reality of rising production costs.
