In late August, Owlcat Games and Another Angle Games announced plans to release “Shadow of the Road” on PC on November 12—just one week before the console debut of the highly anticipated crime action game “GTA VI”
As Owlcat explains, the developers needed extra time to refine the “tactical aspect” of combat and adjust the balance. It is important to the team that positioning, initiative, and abilities play a significant role in every skirmish, and that every battle encourages thoughtful planning and meaningful decision-making. Additionally, the developers are enhancing progression systems to give players more reasons to experiment with skills.

As a reminder, the events of “Shadow of the Road” unfold in an alternate 19th-century Japan:
“The year is 1868. Japan has become the stage for a bloody confrontation between traditionalists supporting the Tokugawa Shogunate and the army of Emperor Mutsuhito—a force backed by the East Nippon Company and equipped with the latest Western technological advancements. Warriors, spies, and magical beings struggle to survive in a world where the clash between magic and machinery, tradition and innovation, is plain to see: the understated forms of ancient shrines are dwarfed by monumental steam-powered structures. The country stands at a crossroads between its cherished historical heritage and the relentless march of progress, and the victor of this battle remains uncertain. Japan’s fate hangs in the balance.”
— From the official description
The story centers on the ronin Satoru and Akira, who are tasked with protecting a mysterious boy. Along the journey, they are joined by other heroes, each with their own unique backstory and motivations. Your actions will shape the narrative—you can forge new bonds, shatter long-standing friendships, and mend broken family ties.
