Valve may have just given Half-Life fans their biggest clue yet. A developer’s unexpected mention of the mysterious codename “HLX” during a public presentation has reignited speculation about the long-rumored Half-Life 3.
The incident took place at GameSoundCon 2026, where Valve composer and sound designer Mike Morasky discussed the company’s approach to audio technology. While explaining how different games use their own implementations of Valve’s HDR audio system, Morasky mentioned both Deadlock and HLX.
The comment immediately caught the attention of fans familiar with years of Half-Life 3 rumors. Fellow developer David Feise appeared to react with a sarcastic “Nice work,” later joking that Morasky had only mentioned HLX once.
What Is HLX, and Why Does It Matter?
HLX has appeared in datamined Valve-related files for years, leading to speculation that it could be the internal codename for a new Half-Life game. Its resemblance to HLVR, the codename associated with Half-Life: Alyx, has further fueled these theories.
Previous reports have suggested that Valve has been developing a new single-player Half-Life experience. However, the company has never officially confirmed that HLX is Half-Life 3.
Morasky’s remark adds an intriguing new piece of evidence because the codename was mentioned directly by a Valve employee during a public event, rather than being discovered solely through game files.
Is Half-Life 3 Finally Happening?
Despite the excitement, fans should remain cautious. Valve has not announced Half-Life 3, revealed gameplay footage, or provided a release date. The exact identity of HLX also remains unconfirmed.
Still, the accidental mention has given the gaming community a fresh reason to believe that something is happening behind the scenes at Valve.
For a franchise that has kept players waiting for a direct sequel to Half-Life 2 for nearly two decades, even a brief slip of the tongue is enough to make headlines.
For now, one thing is clear: HLX has been mentioned publicly, but whether it really is Half-Life 3 remains the biggest unanswered question.
